Directed by Sean Anders, “Instant Family” is a comedy that reunites him with actor Mark Wahlberg for the 3rd time. Previously having worked together for both the “Daddy’s Home” films, they bring heart and humor into the stressful and entertaining misadventures that come along with adoption. Wahlberg plays Pete, who along with his supportive wife Ellie (Rose Byrne) decide to renovate their large home. Through the friendly prodding of their friends, they realize that without children they will have an empty household. Upon contacting a social worker named Karen (Octavia Spencer), they become smitten with an outgoing young foster teen, only to find out she has two younger siblings. Not wanting to split them apart, Pete and Ellie make the bold decision to adopt all three, having no idea what they were getting themselves into. Between, dealing with their new children’s texting habits, their propensity for getting in trouble, and tending to their emotional needs, the entire family learns the importance of bonding, regardless of where you came from. Anders, having previously directed the raucous comedies “Sex Drive” and “Horrible Bosses 2,” brings a more grounded tone to the film, making Instant Family a relatable and amusing look at the trials and tribulations involved in parenting.
