Directed by Shane Black, who actually appeared in the original franchise starter in 1987, “The Predator” breaks new ground by having the universe’s most lethal alien assassins evolve into something even more terrifying. In this outing, a beleaguered Army Ranger (Boyd Holbrook), and his team (Keegan-Michael Key, Thomas Jane) encounter the stealth killers during a retrieval mission to rescue hostages. Unbeknownst to them, the Predators have returned to Earth with a vengeance, after being summoned by mistake by a young boy. With the help of biologist Casey Brackett (Olivia Munn), the crew must work in unison to prevent their foes from taking over the planet. The 4th picture in the series, “The Predator” has subtle references to the past films, with actor Jake Busey playing the son of his father’s character in “Predator 2.” Additionally, with the introduction of alien dogs, upgraded gear, and new hunting techniques, “The Predator” aims to pack action into every frame. Black’s mission was to bring back the big screen “popcorn fun” aspect that was missing from its sequels, and its R rating promises that the gore factor is front and center. “The Predator” is a thrilling throwback to old school suspense films of the eighties, while propelling the series forward with fresh, exciting ideas that break new ground for the titular alien.
